SEED BEADS
🟢 SEED BEADS – Traditional Czech glass beads from GB Creative
✨ What are seed beads?
Seed beads are the most commonly used type of glass beads – small, round beads, colloquially known as ‘melt’. Their history dates back to the 15th century, when they first appeared in Venice, Italy.
In the Czech Republic, rocailles have been manufactured industrially since the 18th century and are now a symbol of precision, quality and a long-standing glassmaking tradition, which GB Creative proudly supports.
Seed Beads are produced in sizes ranging from 1.4 mm to 8 mm. The size is traditionally designated by the so-called ‘zero series’ – from the smallest 16/0 to the largest 1/0.
Large sizes 31/0 to 34/0, known as ‘potatoes’, are rare and popular with collectors.
The GB Creative range includes all standard and special sizes for both professional and hobby use.

🔹 How are seed beads made?
Rocailles beads are created using a unique technology:
-
cutting glass tubes with round or square holes,
-
followed by heating, which makes the beads round and shiny,
-
sorting by size and shape for perfect precision.
This process produces uniform glass beads, ideal for jewellery making, embroidery or embellishing clothing and decorations.
🎨 Surface finishes and types of seed beads
Depending on the degree of processing, seed beads are classified as:
-
Factory-finished seed beads (Natural Opaque) – pure, without further finishing,
-
Finished seed beads – surface-decorated (e.g. through dyeing, electroplating, matting or other techniques).
On the GB Creative website, the type of surface finish is always specified for each product, so you can easily select the right type for your project.
